Zine Workshop

I produced this in a one-day workshop. It is called 'Dear Mum and Dad', referring to the photograph that features throughout - the front of a postcard from a boy writing to his parents on a trip to Paris.
On each page, the photograph has been copied, but further zoomed in each time. This effect was repeated again and again until the last page appears to be just an abstract range of colours. The zooming effect reminded me of some kind of surveillance camera, closing in on the building in the photograph. For this reason, alongside the images I placed an excerpt from Orwell's '1984'.

"There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised."

Fluid Typeface

A typeface created through the shapes formed with the fluid motion of ink dropping in to water.

After taking photographs of falling ink, I traced from prints using water-soluble pens and crayons - some of these strokes created are seen below.

I then scanned in the individual strokes and placed them together to create letterforms.

I bound a book today.

Traditional bookbinding workshop. Definitely something I'll be doing again very soon.
